What return will you receive from your time investment this week?

It's an illusion that we can actually manage time itself.  Time just is.  The more important question we need to ask ourselves is how will we use our time this week to net us the highest return on investment.  Stop trying to manage time and start using time to design the business and life you want to create. CONSIDER THIS:  You have exactly the same amount of time in your day as the CEO of Google or Sheryl Sandburg, COO of Facebook or Mark Burnett the Producer of shows like Survivor, … [Read more...]

Recent studies using fMRIs have shown that we have a higher level of retention for information that we were initially most curious about.  Albert Einstein is quoted as saying, “I have no special talents, I am only passionately curious.”   So, what might you do to enhance curiosity in yourself and others?  Here’s some tools and techniques you can use to get started: USE THESE:  Tools to foster curiosity.  You’ll discover how to fire the Seeking Newness neural pathway in your … [Read more...]

Will you take the shoulds off your shoulders this week?

The word "should" can really weigh you down.  For many of us, that word echoes in our minds often.  You might say things like, "I should be more successful than I am", "I should make more money than I do", " I should be nicer or smarter or more disciplined or less angry or a better leader or father or mother or son or daughter.". The shoulds can add up internally and they can also be directed at your team members and others.  "They should work harder, be on time, take more initiative, be … [Read more...]

Becoming a Leader

In my last blog, I asked if you were a manager or a leader.  Today, I want to share thoughts on how to become a better leader.  I believe the biggest difference between managers and leaders is the focus areas.  Managers tend to focus on tasks, processes, and budgets.  These are critical skills but so are leadership skills.  Leaders focus on people and how they are contributing.  This is often messy, confusing and challenging work.  But the reward is great.  As you become a better leader, … [Read more...]

Are you a manager or a leader?

How did you answer the question in the title?  I think organizations need both managers and leaders.  We need managers to run the business, improve processes, hit quality goals, and make decisions.  We need leaders to inspire us, to look around the corner and see where we are headed, to develop others and to transform the organization.  It is important to understand the distinction between managers and leaders so you can improve your skills in the areas where you may not be as strong.  … [Read more...]

Work – Life Balance. It’s all about the choices.

I had a friend who got killed in a hit and run accident a few years ago.   He was out for a run early in the morning.  He loved getting up for a run and starting his day with an emotional high.  He would have turned 50 the day after I turned 40.  He left behind a loving wife and two loving daughters. I think if I had asked him the day before he died how he was doing, he might have said, “Busy.  I cannot find enough time in the day.  I am having a hard time balancing work and … [Read more...]

Musings from a New Small Business Owner

Thanks to all the folks who have helped me as I launched Voltage Leadership back in September.  Many of you have asked how it is going and what lessons I have learned.  These questions have encouraged me to step back and think about how I’m feeling in this new role of owner.  I have had a boss since I was a paper boy at 11 years old and it is sometimes strange to not have someone to run my ideas by for approval.  I have used friends and other coaches to help me with my thinking and I … [Read more...]
